The result takes aesthetic and narrative cues from fantasy and science fiction tropes, adapting fragments of Jaafar Latiff’s batik works into a metaphysical landscape. Microscopic visualisations of warp and weft of the textiles enmesh with vignettes of an alternate fictional environment, mapped by an unnamed consciousness. Fragmented scenes of parks and wharfs, pixels and scans emerge at different scales to create an intoxicating headspace of terror and euphoria. More obscure aspects of Jaafar’s practice, such as his foray into computer graphics in the 1990s, are highlighted through a focus on non-human perspectives and dissonant settings. Quest or Quest seeks to reconsider Jaafar’s practice through an alternate lens, interweaving glimpses of Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) deep fakes, an image synthesis technique that generates faces based on machine learning, into a multi-layered landscape.&nbsp; Works that inspired this film include Jaafar’s Wandering series, Fortune Teller (1967), Self Portrait (1989) and Sea Port of Singapore (1987). The film features artworks at 20X to 200X magnification under a Keyence VHX- 6000 digital microscope, courtesy of the Heritage Conservation Centre. Within such an existentially charged ecosystem, these strange vessels communicate in unpredictable ways. Commodified items with mirror-like properties begin to collectively function as an interface for sentient communication. Simultaneously tormented and consoled by these entities is their owner and the film’s protagonist, a lone human body carrying a seemingly abnormal condition. This otherness, so physically manifested and chronic, is diligently hidden from the world at large. The only empathy it receives is the form of a spectral daemon. A fermented lovechild between the Japanese ‘slice-of-life’ hit reality TV Terrace House and the classic surveillance microstate show Big Brother, LCS is an exercise in parafactual entertainment, mimicking essential premises and tropes of reality TV. A variety of recording devices are set up to follow 3 artist-creatives as they inhabit a co-working studio for two-and-a-half weeks, documenting their daily activities, interactions, and tensions in the space. Mystery guests are invited and scheduled activities are carried out as stimuli for our hungry Creatives. We often speak of knowledge as a light, but the locus and engine of all understanding resides in the dark enclosed space of a skull. From that space, the physical and mental actions (and their results) of any individual, are generated. It is the idiosyncratic textures of perception, assimilation, memory, and the permeability of the self that underscore the nature of this work. The narratives of Blue Trapezium are set in a nowhere place. This setting evokes a bRAve nEw woRLD informed by the discoveries of neuroscience and the quickly evolving “collisions” that occur in our networks. It is an elastic space characterised by the dynamics of deconstruction - a fragmented, endlessly shifting context. Permeable frames of history and ontology are set against the spectacle of fiction, re-articulating the tensions from which these elements arise. Millennial fantasies, accidental occult tributes in digital media and imagined historical subcultures are among the subjects filtered through an idiosyncratic gaze that supports and undermines them.&nbsp;Operating alongside strategies of entanglement and the abject, Chong’s installations and films simultaneously counter and revel within the apparatus of the moving image. Chong’s work has appeared internationally in the VIVO Media Arts Centre, National Gallery Singapore, Hothouse, EYE Filmmuseum, soft/WALL/studs, Supernormal, DECK, Stedelijk Museum, Singapore Art Museum, SSBA Salon, Asian Film Archive’s Oldham Theatre, Singapore Short Film Awards, New People Cinema, and the Athens Digital Art Festival, amongst others. Currently based in Singapore, Chong was also the art editor for Mynah Magazine, an independent longform publication dedicated to exploring both contemporary and historical Singaporean culture.
